Shooter games rarely behave the way Tunnel Rats behaves. This first person shooter is something that tries to bring out the horrors of war. And in a way, to its own downfall, it succeeds in doing so.
The gamer plays an American soldier names Brooks who is stranded in the Vietnamese landscape. Apart from the really terrible and difficult landscape, the very character you play is unsympathetic. You rant out monologues due to childhood memories and antiwar feelings. This is rarely interesting considering the voice acting is the same low quality as the writing.
Most of the game is located in the tunnels through which you need to pass and escape. This is frustrating considering the amount of death traps here that are almost inescapable. Add to that the fact that you need to move at snail speed to actually locate these traps. Moreover, the restart or save options are unfriendly enough to waste a lot of time. The dark design that hardly has anything pleasant in there makes for really depressing gaming. To add to this, there are snakes that seem to be tailored to the Vietnamese needs.
This is a PC game that is not worried about being politically correct, which is too much of it here to make people not like this at all. Apart from that, this is a game that is not sure about the idea of fun. Add to that the AI failures, the bug, the unfriendly interface and gamestyle because of which it can be avoided.
