Prototype - Review, PS3

New York has never before been subjected to destruction and carnage quite like that portrayed in Prototype. In this fast-paced action game, the military is battling it out to control a viral epidemic that’s turning people into mutants.

You’re cast as Alex Mercer, an amnesiac. Luckily, what Alex lacks in memories, is made up for in dexterity and superpowers, thus making him an incredible character to play.

Mercer is quite easy to control, performing all sorts of stunts effortlessly. Initially combat is too simple, but as you move forward, remembering all the button combinations in Mercers inventory becomes a tad bit challenging.

Nevertheless, combat in Prototype is beyond awesome. You have the ability to slow down the game at your will, using a smooth radial menu as well as the ability to shape-shift. You also have the option to use more conventional weapons dropped by enemies and, ultimately, hijack tanks. Thanks to these options the diverse story missions and some boss fights can be approached in various ways.

Throughout the game, new enemies and hazards are introduced. Moves you depend upon might not always be accessible or effective, thus, making Manhattan a progressively more terrifying place to be in.

The plot and central character are attractive. The huge armory of abilities is a definite plus point. The amount of difficulty is just right, and the fact that you’re continuously adding new moves to your arsenal, keeps the game from getting monotonous. Unfortunately, the scenery is too dreary throughout and at times the controls get tricky.

Despite its rare flaws, Prototype is one hell-of-an action game that shouldn’t be missed.
